Money. We all need it, use it, and think about it. But when it comes to faith, talking about finances can feel uncomfortable. Yet God cares deeply about how we handle our resources. The Book of Ezra offers practical insights on honoring Him with what we have. Let’s explore this together.
A Generous Beginning
The Book of Ezra opens with a stunning act of generosity. When King Cyrus allowed the Israelites to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple, he invited everyone to contribute. The response? An outpouring of gold, silver, goods, and livestock—sacrificial gifts to support God’s work (Ezra 1:4).
These weren’t wealthy people; many were exiles living modestly. Yet they gave freely and generously. It’s a powerful reminder to approach giving with faith and open hands. Do we trust God to provide as we give?
Stewardship in Action
When the Israelites returned, they didn’t delay. Ezra 2 records the names of those who came back and their financial contributions to the temple project. Each family gave according to their ability, pooling resources to make restoration possible (Ezra 2:68-69).
This is stewardship: recognizing that what we have isn’t just for us but for God’s purposes. How are we using our resources? Are we investing in things that reflect God’s heart and advance His kingdom?
When Finances Feel Tight
Honoring God with finances isn’t always easy. The Israelites faced opposition as they worked on the temple. Discouragement set in, and progress stalled (Ezra 4:4-5). Sound familiar? We’ve all had seasons of financial strain where holding tightly to every dollar feels tempting.
But God provided encouragement through prophets like Haggai and Zechariah, urging the people to press on (Ezra 5:1-2). Today, He offers us His Word, His Spirit, and His presence to guide us through financial challenges. Sometimes, it’s as simple as praying, “Lord, help me trust You.”
Trusting God with Everything
One unforgettable moment in Ezra comes in chapter 8. As Ezra and the exiles prepared to transport offerings to Jerusalem, they prayed and fasted for God’s protection (Ezra 8:21-23). This act of surrender showed complete trust in God.
Whether we have much or little, our finances are safest in God’s hands. Honoring Him isn’t about a specific amount but about trusting Him with what we have. Are we willing to let go and let Him lead?
Let’s Reflect
Ezra’s story challenges us to honor God with our finances through:
Generosity: Reflecting God’s heart by giving freely.
Stewardship: Using our resources for His purposes.
Trust: Surrendering to God in plenty and in want.
So, what’s one step you can take to honor God in your finances this week? Maybe it’s committing to regular giving, reworking your budget, or simply praying for wisdom. Whatever it is, remember: God is with you every step of the way. Let’s continue the conversation—I’d love to hear how Ezra’s story inspires you.
